Founded in 1999, Solarex Energy SA supplies a turnkey solar engineering and installation service to enterprises and luxury homes in Southern Africa. Since formation, Solarex has ensured that over 741 businesses and residences have achieved energy independence, lower operating costs, a greener brand image, tax reductions. And a better bottom line. Completed projects include standalone, hybrid and grid-integrated PV installations as well as industrial solar water heating plants. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Solarex is owned and led by CEO David Liddell, a professional engineer with more than 15 years of solar energy design expertise and project management experience.


RECENT PROJECTS

Grand Central 230kW PV

Grand Central is an apartment block situated in Wynberg, Cape Town. It consists of 405 apartments, mostly occupied by lower- to middle-income tenants. There are also 9 retail tenants on the ground floor. The block uses 1,535MWh per annum and the solar system produces around 320MWh (21%). A small amount of excess energy (between 3 and 13MWh) is exported to the City of Cape Town.

Wellington off-grid farm

This off-grid system was designed for an owner who purchased a bare erf, and who intends to farm lavender. The solar system feeds the main house, a manager’s cottage and a central workshop, security system as well as borehole pumps and water treatment system. Solarex designed the solar/battery system to supply the estimated loads with no Eskom supply. To date the diesel generator has been needed for only 14 hours in winter.

Melville Place hot water

Melville Place is a new residential development located in Ottery in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. The estate was developed with a strong focus on social and environmental sustainability. It was designed to provide low- and middle-income working residents with affordable yet modern housing. The complex consists of three-storey blocks with a total of 346 apartments.

The project was awarded 2nd place by the International Energy Agency (solar heating division) 2022.
